When this arrived in the mail, Sophia, my four-year-old, was thrilled! She seemed to recognize right away that it was for her, and she immediately ran off to watch.
Little Pim is a panda who helps teach babies, toddlers, and preschoolers vocabulary in foreign languages. The DVD we got is Spanish (disc 2 of 3, “Wake Up Smiling”), but there are many other options. Available languages include Spanish, Italian, Chinese, German, English (as a second language), French, Japanese, Arabic, Russian, and Hebrew. They even have a quiz you can take to help determine which language is the best fit for your child.
Studies have shown that babies “lose” the neural connections for language sounds they don’t need/use, making it harder to really “hear” them later. Because of this, we like to expose our little ones to the sounds of other languages during the first few years of life, even if we aren’t actively teaching them these languages. The immersion-style, entertaining Little Pim videos allow us to do both.
If you’re going to be buying DVD’s for a young child in your life this Christmas, why not consider one of these, to provide both entertainment and education?
