Michael Hyatt, CEO of Thomas Nelson, talks about non-negotiables in his blog. His non-negotiables: Bible reading, prayer, aerobic exercise, strength training, eating five meals, taking vitamins, general reading, life plan review, solo retreats, financial review.
What Are Non-Negotiables?
So what are non-negotiables (as described in this blog post)? According to Mr. Hyatt, they are the top ten non-negotiable disciplines which, if practiced faithfully, would make the most impact. Many of these will vary for each of us. They will probably even vary based on the current seasons of our lives. But this seems like a good way to make sure that the goals we set and the activities with which we fill our days are accomplishing what is important to us, and that we have the proper disciplines to lay a solid foundation to our lives.
If you aren’t already doing most of the things on your list, I would suggest that you might want to start with just five — or even three — non-negotiables, as it is very difficult to develop many habits all at once. But if several of them are already habits that you just want to be sure to keep up with while adding the others, go for it with the full ten. I would have to give this some more thought to be sure I don’t need to tweak it, but right offhand, I would say that my list would include:
1. Bible reading
2. Prayer
3. Exercise (Because of the way I exercise, I have no need to break this out.)
4. Taking vitamins
5. Drinking water
6. Regular planning
7. Inbox processing
8. Maintaining the weekly routine
9. Prepping for dinner early in the day
10. ???
