FFH has a new Christmas album out, released on October 18th. It’s billed as having “original songs and Christmas classics.” I was a little surprised to find that the album starts with “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” Although my family enjoys the song for its musicality, the lyrics are quite controversial in Christian circles, so it seems an odd choice as the opener for a Christian Christmas album. (The “cigarette” in the original lyrics was removed for this version, though – just FYI.)
What it does have in common with the other classic choices, though, is its overall “feel.” these are not Christmas carols so much as wintry Christmas early-20th century classics. “Winter Wonderland,” “Jingle Bell Rock,” and “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” are other titles that fill out this portion of the album’s content.
I enjoyed this album but, to be honest, it didn’t overwhelm me. The vast majority of the album was the classics mentioned above and, although well-done, they didn’t have anything to recommend them as better than, or notably different than, any other renditions of the same songs. In other words, there was nothing wrong with them, but no particular reason to buy them on this album if you already have, say, “Winter Wonderland” on somebody else’s album.
With that said, I do appreciate the original songs on this album, especially “Glorious Impossible.”
