“The Lightlings is an allegorical tale that captures the essence of the biblical story of redemption in a manner that will fascinate and delight children.” That description, from the dust jacket, is a pretty apt summary of the book.
Using the same frame as the the other books in R.C. Sproul’s children’s series, a question to Grandpa, The Lightlings tells the tale of a race of beings who were once of the light, but who have since disobeyed their maker, the King of Light, and become fearful of the light.
It takes the birth of a perfect baby lightling – and their worship of the baby – to restore their glow. This time, the glow of the lightlings is their reflection of the light that comes from the baby.
The illustrator, Justin Gerard, has brilliantly (no pun intended) captured the essence of these “light” beings, and created truly delightful images to accompany the text.
