Thank you to Late for the Sky for providing us with a copy of The Man Game to facilitate this review.
Just reading the descriptions of The Man Game is fun! It’s full of cards with questions and tasks that are “manly” in nature. Supposedly there are not instructions (’cause we all know men don’t read directions), but that’s not quite true. There are some directions for getting set up, but they’re pretty basic. The “best-looking man” goes first. I guess that’s a guy thing, too, because I imagine if you made that a rule in a game for women we’d never get to playing the game – we’d be too busy debating who goes first!
Women can play, too – ‘though we’re not supposed to win! It doesn’t seem there’s much danger of that. The men in my family have not yet had opportunity to play this together as a group, but my husband and sister and I played it together just to check it out. My sister and I are not “girly” girls, but we both bombed! Despite having been waylaid by a couple cards of questionable “manliness” (“What herb is used for pesto”?! I would not have thought that an inherently “guy” kind of question.), my husband won by a long shot.
Besides questions (like “What’s the first thing to do with your dry cleaning after bringing it home?” and “What plant does tequila come from?” – my paraphrases), there are activities you have to complete. These are what really threw us girls off. Apparently we’re not very athletic even with just our fingers. Tossing (poker-type) chips, playing tabletop football, throwing playing cards into a box top, etc. all cost us dearly!
We had fun, though. I look forward to seeing how this goes when the men all play together!
Guys can be notoriously hard to buy gifts for sometimes, so give this a shot.
(Also, while you’re checking it out, take a look at Late for the Sky’s other games. They have quite a selection of interesting-looking games.)
