Our tv stands on top of this lovely piece of furniture:

(Sorry for the lousy photo. And please excuse all the cords. Hubby’s computer desk is temporarily stuffed into the living room beside the tv cabinet, while the office is prepped and painted.)
It was an old television — the kind that is built into its own cabinet. When my husband was first out on his own, he didn’t have a lot of furniture. He found this in his parents’ shed (the television didn’t work) and decided to redeem it. (Unfortunately, since this was before my time, I don’t have any “before” pictures.) He removed the “guts” of the television, refinished the wood, and replaced the fabric in the speaker area at the bottom.
For a long time, our television was in the cabinet, which was nice. (I prefer not having the tv “out” in the middle of the room as a major focal point.) But then we were given a much larger television, which doesn’t fit inside. So now the tv sits on top and the cabinet holds the DVD player, VCR, etc. (I don’t think a smaller television would fit in there anymore, with all this stuff!) There is even room underneath the cabinet for the subwoofer from our surround sound and, since the bottom of this furniture was designed to house a speaker, it works great!
