There is a lot of information out there about how to blog, or how to blog better. What follows is a hand-picked list of really excellent resources to beef up your blogging skills in a variety of areas, from content to headlines to images to presentation. These are the courses and resources I personally have most benefited from. (Unfortunately, some of the earlier tools I benefited from are no longer available, so this list is shorter than I’d like.)
31 Days to Build a Better Blog
31 Days to Build a Better Blog is the “gold standard” for blog-building. It assumes that you already know the basics of how to get the blog actually set up/installed but, beyond that, it’s fairly comprehensive. Each day offers a new assignment designed to grow, expand, and/or improve your blog. This is an oldie but a goodie, and can be a good starting point for newbies.
Sticky Blogging & Sticky SEO
Sticky Blogging and, to an even greater extent, Sticky SEO have been, hands-down, the most impactful courses I’ve taken. After blogging for years and thinking I understood SEO, I could visibly see the growth in the discoverability of my posts after applying the things I learned in Kelly’s courses. And they’re super-practical, so applying them isn’t some vague, pie-in-the-sky thing; you’ll actually know exactly what to do. Unfortunately, these aren’t open year-round, but you can get on her list to know right away when a new cohort opens up.
Tasty Food Photography
Let’s face it, pictures have become vastly more important over the past several years of blogging. Especially with the advent of Pinterest, it’s essential to have decent pictures if you want your content to stand out from the crowd. Pinch of Yum’s Tasty Food Photography is a very practical, understandable guide to improving your photography. Obviously, it focuses on food. But the photography principles explained here should apply to anything you need to photograph.
Build a Better Blogging Schedule
Build a Better Blogging Schedule is my book, and although I can’t say I learned a lot from it, it integrates some of the things I learned here and there from other sources and courses — including those that are no longer around.
