Who thought to come up with a holiday called “What You Think Upon Grows Day”? Whoever they were, they were wise, because it’s true. The Bible tells us to take every thought captive.
“…casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ…” (2 Cor. 10:5)
I have come across a few different quotes that, in a manner of speaking, are different ways of saying the same thing – that just because a thought comes into our heads, doesn’t necessarily mean we have to dwell on it.
“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.” (Ph’p. 4:8, emphasis added)
These couple of quotes I have pinned to my Pinterest board are good examples of quotes I’ve come across that give me other ways to “visualize” the same thing. This first one reminds me that just because it popped into my head doesn’t make it so.
(When Pinterest changed their look, they apparently also changed the way Pins are embedded – and it doesn’t work right. So please excuse the plain text links – and please check them out; they’re good!)
And this one is another way to think about taking every thought captive…watch for the waves and choose carefully which ones to ride:
How ’bout you? Does taking every thought captive come easily to you, or do you struggle? Do you have any other great quotes or good illustrations for this thought-sifting process?
