Thank you to Jupiter Creations for providing the penguin Mugz to facilitate this post.
What Are Mugz?
Mugz are a unique gift and a fun treat for the kids. These little single-serving ice cream makers enable the kids to create their own ice cream (or similar frozen dessert) in just a few minutes, in a serving size that will not make mama cringe.
They work on the same principle as the old crank-style ice cream makers, but on a much smaller scale.
How They Work
After taking all the upper parts off, you fill the bottom section with small amounts of ice, salt, and water. (The necessary amounts are designated in the instruction booklet.)
This is not the time to use your more-expensive, good quality sea salt! Since you won’t actually be consuming the salt, just use the cheap stuff.
As you can see, these all go in the very bottom of the maker. There is then a little metal tray that sits on top of this, with a plastic cap. The ingredients for the actual ice cream go in here.
We were able to make some tasty vanilla ice milk by using our fresh, raw milk and a few drops of vanilla stevia. (I think we used two drops to 1/4 cup of milk.)
This was the one stage at which we felt the instructions broke down. They don’t say how much liquid should be added. Instead, they specify “to the fill line,” which we couldn’t find. So we over-filled ours and it gushed out and made a mess. It was something slightly less than 1/4 cup.
Then we put on the top lid (the penguin head), the kids took it outside (I was a little concerned about leakage, since we’d already overfilled it), and they shook it up. Just shake it for 2-3 minutes. I have no pictures of this because they would have just been blurs.
Our ice cream was frozen a bit unevenly. In all fairness, I suspect that had a lot to do with waiting between steps to take pictures! The top was rather runny.
But the part underneath was frozen nicely.
My guess is that we left it sit for too long before shaking it up, so the part along the metal plate froze before we got the liquid moving. If we’d moved a bit more quickly from step to step, I think it would have been more consistent. Regardless, it tasted good!
The kids had fun with it, and they say it “makes good ice cream”; it’s just rather messy.
This would be a fun stocking stuffer or unique gift!
