The DotGirl First Period Kit is a package designed to have on hand to be sure your daughter is prepared. The kit comes in a round zipper pouch about the size of a CD and about 2 inches thick. It contains the basics she’ll need — a handful of pads and some disposal bags, a couple of hand wipes, and a reusable heating pad for easing cramps.
It also includes a little booklet with answers to twenty common questions girls have about periods. I hope this booklet isn’t all the interaction you have with your daughter about this important topic! I hope you will take the time to talk with her and really teach her about this subject. But the book is sufficiently well done that if this were all a young girl had access to, she’d probably be okay.
I was very impressed with the thoroughness of the booklet. Every important question is addressed and completely answered. However, answers are still kept age-appropriate, and no unnecessary extra information is provided. I would be very comfortable just handing this over to my daughter, who is nine. (I would have been okay with this even a year or two ago, given the content of the book.) As it is, it should serve for her as a very easy-to-reference review of the things we discussed in Maidens by His Design. (It’s also easier to understand.)
The case is simply a pink case with white trim. [Feb 2025: the current case seems to be turquoise.] It has the “Dot Girl” logo on it, but nothing about periods, so it’s pretty discreet.
It’s a good thing to have on hand for your own daughter. I would also suggest that it could be a wonderful thing for schools or church youth groups to have on hand for girls whose parents may not have prepared them as well as they could have.
Highly recommended. (My daughter gives this a thumbs-up, and plans to keep hers at grandma’s house, as she’s pretty well prepared here at home, and doesn’t attend school away from home.)
