Foldin’ Money
When you have to give a gift at the last minute, cash is an option that immediately springs to mind. But plain old cash – much as it’s appreciated! – can be a little boring. One solution is to have on hand some templates like these for folding the money into fun shapes.
Foldin’ Money offers templates, in sets of four, for folding U.S. or Canadian bills into a variety of shapes. Designs include a heart, cake, necktie, airplane, evergreen tree, hot air balloon, shirt, star, house, flower, ship, and rocket. Four different four-packs are available, as well as a “Jackpot Collection” containing all thirteen designs.
Each package includes directions, but these are not “packages of instructions.” They contain cardstock templates that are intended to remain inside the completed designs. (You can contact the company for template refills if you have already purchased a particular set.)
To start, each design tells you how many bills you need to complete it:

Then you follow the step-by-step instructions, folding and taping (with double-sided tape), until the design is complete. Here is what my first attempt looks like:

I was a bit disappointed that the designs rely so heavily on tape. It doesn’t stick very well to the special paper money is printed on. That’s probably a good thing, though, because you have to be able to get it off easily without tearing the cash once it is received. I’m not sure I understand why I need a kit to tape bills around cardstock, but, then, maybe I’m just craftier than average? (And, if so, maybe this would be a good “crafty gift,” too!)
My daughter liked the finished heart, and probably would have been more excited to receive cash packaged this way than by itself.
