This is one of my favorite items from this year’s gift guide, because its consequences are so significant! The I Like Book is a tool to help parents build their children’s sense of value.
The bulk of the book consists of daily spaces for writing something you like about your child. These spaces are grouped into month-long “chapters.”
Interspersed throughout are places for the child to interact, as well, writing about things and people they like. At the end of each chapter are other fun pages, for adding photos of yourselves, sketching, and otherwise personalizing the book.
Can we tell our children what we like about them without a book? I certainly hope so! But there are some definite advantages to having these pages compiled in a book like this:
1. It provides accountability. We can speak building-up words to our children, but many of us don’t, at least not as often as we should. (Raising hand here.) The daily format of the book provides accountability to remember to do so regularly.
2. It provides the potential to build a routine of interacting with our children, that can last beyond the book. Sometimes a “thing” can act as a catalyst for relationship-building that might otherwise be awkward. This could definitely do that.
3. By providing a central location for a whole long list of “likes,” the book offers a source of encouragement for “down” days. When the book is full, what a wonderful thing it will be for a child to have! Feeling worthless? Pull out your I Like Book and start reading! (For this reason, especially, I think it’s important for each child to have his own. It comes in different cover colors, so you can select different colors for each child and easily tell them apart.)
Very highly recommended!

I received copies of the I Like Book to facilitate this review. As always, opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
