We heard a statistic at Relevant last weekend that I found quite fascinating. Although (unfortunately) pornography is still the #1 topic online (as far as page hits, etc.), the #2 topic is mom sites.
I got to thinking about that, wondering why that is. And I think I have an answer. We are missing the wisdom of older women that used to be built into the fabric of society. Our culture has lost these mentoring relationships as we have become so much more mobile, we’ve withdrawn from those in our communities, and so many women have gone back to work. (Older ladies, if your children have left the nest and you are thinking that now you need to go get a job because there isn’t anything else useful for you to do, please rethink this! WE need you.)
This vacancy is being felt, so women are looking for the wisdom of other women online. That we are able to find this online is not a bad thing! But it is a grievous thing that is so difficult to find it offline. may we remember this as we raise up the next generation.
Oh so true. Fortunately I have a wonderfully wise mother who fills the vacancy for me in many ways, but in general, the pattern of older women teaching and mentoring younger women is hard to find…even in church families, where it should be the norm. I do hope and pray that the tide will turn.
