With my first baby, my milk dried up and I didn’t know it right away. Poor little thing was literally starving for a little while, while we sorted out what was going on. Consequently, we’ve paid pretty close attention with our last two babies. For a while, we were worried about Livia. We had reached a point where my milk was clearly not enough for her, but couldn’t get her to eat/drink anything else! Obviously, this was a problem.
By now, we’ve had her eating solid food for a while (‘though it did take convincing), but one of our immediate stop-gap measures was to boost my milk supply as much as possible. One of the ways we did this was use of the More Milk Plus supplement from MotherLove.
More Milk Plus (like the other supplements from MotherLove) is a vegetarian, gluten-free herbal supplement formulated to increase a nursing mother’s milk supply. It contains fenugreek, fennel, blessed thistle, and nettles. (If you’re also pregnant, you will need to take a different formula designed to be safe during pregnancy.)
I don’t think I was ever completely consistent in taking these for the fully daily dosage, even a single day. But I could tell the difference between the days I took them and the days I didn’t. (Being able to tell the difference is always a good thing, with any supplement!) They definitely helped.
MotherLove has other products, too, like pregnant belly salve, sitz bath spray, and diaper rash/thrush ointment. They even carry a pocket guide to wild edible and medicinal plants! (Doesn’t that sound like a fun reference?) Check it out, and follow them on Facebook and/or Twitter/X.
[UPDATE 6/28/2012: My sister has a month-old baby. When he was 2 weeks old, she had to have emergency surgery, requiring her to “pump and dump.” Because of the lack of nursing, her milk supply plummeted the morning of the day she intended to return to nursing him. After two days of taking More Milk Plus at the rate of two capsules a day (the recommended dosage is 3/day), she had an overabundance. So, in her words, “That stuff WORKS!”]
Disclosure: MotherLove provided me with a bottle of More Milk Plus to facilitate this review. As always, all opinions expressed here are entirely my own. Of course, nothing here should be construed as medical advice and the FDA doesn’t even read my blog, much less approve anything on it. 🙂
