The Recipe Rock is a kitchen tool designed for the digital age. Many of us now use printouts of recipes from the internet; this is designed to hold them in place while you cook.
I already have a cookbook holder for when I’m using traditional cookbooks, but I keep my tried-and-true recipes in a large binder in the kitchen. This binder is bulky enough that it’s not very practical to work with the whole book on the counter so, instead, I pull out one page (in a page protector) at a time to work with. When I used my cookbook holder with these pages, they would flop over and I’d have to stick a piece of cardboard behind them.
The Recipe Rock works perfectly! The small marble-looking thing you see in the photo is a a very strong magnet used to hold the page in place. Through the plastic of the page protector and the two sheets of paper inside, it worked beautifully – the magnet had no trouble holding. The curve of the Rock helps the paper to remain upright (unless your 9-year-old physically pushes it over). It is surprisingly attractive, too – it looks like polished granite. (Although I just discovered they have colors! The red would look great in my kitchen. 🙂 ) It’s plenty heavy, so it won’t tip over.
In fact, it is heavy enough to also serve as a paperweight on your desk – where it is perfectly suited to yet another function: it is great for holding papers upright for you while you type from them. (This is something I have always had difficulty with.) My only “caveat,” as it were, is to be sure the marble-shaped magnet doesn’t get into the hands of a baby or small child (‘though this is not likely to be a problem unless your baby is crawling around on the counter).
Although this is pretty heavy, it’s a great size for a stocking! It would also make a nice housewarming gift, or addition to a food-based gift basket.
