It’s that time of year when our graduating seniors start us all thinking about college. Turns out one of our local cashiers is headed off to VCU to major in Spanish. My husband majored in Spanish at VCU. For those who don’t know, VCU is Virginia Commonwealth University. It’s located in downtown Richmond. Fascinating area by day, but…I don’t like it at night.
Personally, I think it’s a bit scary at night, and I wouldn’t walk around down there by myself in the dark. He did, though, and others do it all the time. It’s a lot safer than it used to be, but there are still break-ins and such. I don’t think home security systems of Vivint’s caliber were available back then. Certainly they weren’t in their current incarnation! The increases in technological capabilities have done so much!
Now you can have your home security system “hooked up” to your Smartphone. So not only would a break-in be addressed – you’d be alerted to it before you headed home. (That would certainly be better than walking in on a break-in in progress when you come home from class!)
It’s amazing the differences cell phones have made – to all areas of our lives, but in particular to safety and emergency issues. I remember the last time we were at the ER, noting that everyone present was on the phone to someone. I remarked on how different that was to ten or so years ago, when people didn’t have phones, and my daughter wondered what people did in emergencies then. (Hard to believe my kids don’t recall ever having seen a pay phone!)
How have cell phones enhanced security, health, or safety for you?
