I’ve been working on memorizing Proverbs 31:10-31. As I’ve done so, I’ve realized that the meaning of some verses is much more obvious than others, and I want to write out what I believe each verse is saying. I figured I’d do that here, just in case anyone else is interested. 🙂
Thoughtful discussion is welcome, even if your interpretation differs from mine – but please do not come to these Scriptures with your own idea of what you want and complain because I have not perverted them to your taste. I don’t have the patience for that, and am likely to just delete such comments.
For those who may be interested in following the whole passage, all related posts will be filed under “Spiritual Journal.” (Some will also be filed under “Biblical Family” and/or “Homemaking.”)
I’m going to end this post with the introduction – the summary statement of the passage:
Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this passage! Now that I have a son, I read it with new eyes. Not only do I want to learn from this passage myself, but now I am thinking about how to teach it to my son in order to benefit him later in life. As verse one tells us, this was something a mother taught to her son, and the older my son gets, the more I begin to understand her motivation.
Rubies have value because they are in scarce supply, and I want my son to understand that certain kinds of wives are a dime a dozen, but we hope he chooses to seek out that virtuous “jewel” when the time comes, for she will be a blessing to him all of his days.
