As the holidays approach, many of us will be burning candles, even if we don’t generally burn them the rest of the year.
(As a total aside, stick with 100% soy or palm candles if you can; they’re healthier. Paraffin is made from the same crude oil as diesel fuel, and burning it in the house is similar to exhausting diesel engine into your home’s air. Yuck!)
To keep them burning optimally, we have to trim the candles’ wicks before use and periodically thereafter. When you’re dealing with container candles that can be a little awkward. So here’s my tip: use toenail clippers. Unlike scissors, they face the right direction so there is no awkward twisting or turning.
It works for me. 🙂

Good tip! I have several wide mouth soy candles that don’t cause wick trimming difficulties but my smaller jar candles haven’t been burned in a while. I think we’ll be smelling apples real soon with this tip! 🙂
What a great idea I burn candles in my bedroom because I smoke in there, I have such a hard time with trying to trim the wick. I end up with black fingertips.
I would have never thought of that. Thanks for the tip!
That’s brilliant!
