When I heard about Nairn’s products, I was thrilled: whole oats, and wheat-free. I was bummed to find that they’re not gluten-free, though. 🙁 We got two varieties to try: the Mixed Berries Oat Cookies, and the plain Organic Oatcake Crackers.
The Oatcake crackers say “contains gluten,” but I’m not sure why, unless they’re just assuming the oats have gluten. I don’t see any inherently gluten-containing ingredients for those of us who are sensitive, but not super-sensitive. (I would, obviously, not eat these if I had celiac disease.) They contain oats, sunflower oil, palm oil, sea salt, and baking soda. These crackers are pretty “boring,” and my kids aren’t too impressed with them. I think they’d be pretty tasty, though, if they were topped.
The Mixed Berries Oat Cookies are definitely not gluten-free, as they contain barley malt syrup. My kids love them, though! I can feel good about serving them to the girls because they’re made with whole grains and natural sweeteners. And because they’re grown in Scotland, in a climate conducive to growing oats, the oats are free of insecticides.
Another handy feature is the packaging. Inside the boxes, they are wrapped in packets of four. This is great for packing in lunches (not that we have to do that often). It’s also good for portion control, and simply for helping keep them fresh for longer.
I may have to order a case of these to have on hand when the kids want treats, as they’re such a healthy option!
