It has been great working with Tommy Nelson as a Tommy Mommy, because I’ve been introduced to characters and programs I wasn’t familiar with before. I had heard the name Hermie, but I’d never actually seen any of the Hermie books or videos. This month’s video was my first experience with a Hermie video, and I’m quite impressed!
We got to watch Beehaving is B-E-S-T, a collection of two classic Hermie episodes. Buzby the Misbehaving Bee teaches children the importance of following the rules. Buzby and the Grumblebees is about the need for good behavior, in general (being responsible, not whining, etc.)
The target audience is preschoolers, but all three of my girls (almost 10, 5, and 16 months) watched this together, with me nearby, and all of us enjoyed it. (Well, the 16-month-old mostly ignored it except during the music, but then she dropped everything and paid attention while she danced. 😉 )
Buzby is modeled a bit after Elvis Presley – he has the same hair, he talks like Elvis, and he sings like Elvis. Each episode has one or two catchy songs that encompass the main point of the episode. These are simple, and I did not find them annoying. (That is always a blessing with children’s programs/music!) I think that after a few viewings, my children will be singing these songs throughout the day, which can only be beneficial around here.
And just in case anyone was curious about author Max Lucado – he appears at the beginning and end of the episodes, talking with Hermie. 🙂

Disclosure: Tommy Nelson provided me with a copy of the DVD shown above, to facilitate my review (and is sponsoring the giveaway.) As always, all opinions expressed here are entirely my own, and those of my family.
I find that praising my son when he uses good manners really encourages him to continue to do so.
