Kozy Carrier
It is my personal belief that there are very few necessary baby items. We’ve never owned a swing or a stroller, for instance. But a good baby carrier ranks among the very few items we consider “essentials.” (Others would include diapers, basic clothing, and a carseat.)
Notice I said a good baby carrier. A good baby carrier will maintain sound spinal and hip position for a developing baby. In practical terms, this means that his legs should be at least slightly “up” (as they would be if you were just holding him, without a carrier), rather than dangling and putting unnatural strain on his hips or groin. And the natural curvature of his spine should be allowed for. The Kozy Carrier is one option that does this.
While, personally, I prefer a ring sling for my tiniest babies (although the Kozy can be used with babies from birth), this Asian-style (Mei Tai) carrier has some definite advantages. A one-shoulder sling is not very good for back carries. They’re possible, but not very comfortable. The Kozy Carrier makes these a breeze. It also distributes the weight evenly across both shoulders and your hips. Both of these factors make it an especially great choice for carrying toddlers.
And my daughter loved it. Sophia (now four) called it the “Comfy Kozy.” (Livia is just now getting big enough that I will transition her to the Kozy from my ring sling. I did put her in it some as a newborn, so I could work in the garden, but I’m pretty inept and had trouble keeping her from disappearing down into its depths. I need more practice!) I am blessed to have Kelley living local to me, so I’ve gotten to see Kozies in use with babies in a wide range of ages. And some of the Kozies have been downright gorgeous – as in, I would want one even if I didn’t have a use for it!
The Kozy Carrier has no buckles or fasteners; it’s purely fabric, and ties on. This makes it comfortable to wear. There’s also nothing to heat up in the sun on a summer day. The tie straps are long, but not unwieldy. (Some wraps just seem like miles and miles of fabric strip that you can get lost/tangled in. The Kozy isn’t like that.) It’s easily small enough to carry around in the car. The shoulder straps are lightly padded, but not bulky. And there’s nothing complicated about its use!
You really can’t go wrong with this as a core part of your baby gear.
Thank you to Kelley and the other members of the Kozy company for providing Kozy Carriers for the Baby Shower for Jesus. The photo above was taken from the Kozy site, as well.
